Get a life!

I am not that young anymore. In just a few years I will attain the dreaded age of 30. So when I see that Russia's de facto state party has a "youth group" that likes to spend its time throwing darts at a portrait of Toomas Hendrik Ilves, I take notice.

United Russia's youth group demonstrated Friday against Estonia's decision to remove a monument to Soviet soldiers who fought the Germans in World War II, saying it showed disrespect for those who died fighting Nazism.

About 100 protesters stood outside the Estonian Embassy, throwing darts at a photograph of Estonia's president.

I guess every country needs its enemies. But the idea of tiny Estonia being enemy enough to evoke ire among Russian teenagers is cause for concern. Haven't they got better things to do? Discoteques to attend? Ladies to romance? Careers to pursue? Guys, take it from me. Get a life. Do something more useful with your time then fight proxy battles for Putin's state party. Getting into a dick-waving contest with Estonia is a waste of your time. You only get one life to live. Don't waste yours.

Same goes to some people? here in Estonia. Have you already heard about the incident in your new home town...
Not enough information yet to make any final conclusions.
But it's just a little bit "funny" how those morons have laid low for years and now (while we're under heavy propaganda attack from Russia) this...

I'm sure if you went to downtown Houston and handed out 50 dollars to some bored unemployed youth, you could get 100 people to demonstrate that there was a NASA conspiracy to cover up the abduction of JFK by aliens....

Are these guys on party payroll?

"Boneheads" are a problem across northern Europe and immigrant groups - and that means young Russian guys - are a target. I seem to remember a recent blow-up in Karelia between the locals and some Chechens. I hope they don't pick on me because I am a foreigner. Plus, I'm Italian, and therefore lower on the racial purity scale, although our food is better, and our music is better, and well, everything is better because Italians do it better. :)

They probably are on the payroll or just misguided. Throwing darts at the Estonian president shows they know little about the world. It is in Russia that the Despot Putin makes the rules. Here in Estonia we have a working parliament and President Ilves makes very few decisions and has little power. Despite the ugly political battles between parties we actually have a working democracy. If they want to dart someone, prime minister Ansip would make a more logical target. It's a sad truth that the Russian youth here and there does not understand that fighting the Germans was not an act of altruism but merely a means to secure more land and power for the Soviet Russia. It was the land that Mr Hitler and Mr Stalin had agreed upon with the Molotov-Rippendrop pact. A liberator frees you and LEAVES! Thats not what the Soviets did, is it! No Russian youth is willing to understand that as long as they have the memory of the grandparents with big war hero stories and shiny medals. All of them were deceived.

They're Putin Jugend - the organization is on the payroll, the people themselves may very well just be lemmings.

I think there is a problem with Russian identity all nations want to be proud of someone or something. Russian ppl choose WWII but they don't realize that they started that war they liberated only a small part of Austria the other counries were occupied by Soviet Union = now Russia. Maybe Poles, French, Czech and Bulgar can be proud what they did in that war but even Britain has some spots in meaning too brutal bombing causing too big civilian causalities. My point is there is no good war. The Estonian side in this monument war is in position that Tallinn was not liberated from fascism by Soviet troops there were a short period of Estonian government so they were not liberators there. In the place where that monument lies is questionable that there are any buried soliders because of there is another way bigger place near the presidential palace and Olympic sailing center in Tallinn where all casualties are buried and the plan is to move that monument there. That is not hiding out the monument it will be shown long way to the See. In nature it must not be a big issue it is mostly a political question. I think the problem started because of Putin named fall of the Soviet Union the biggest mistake of the 20th century that was hard to hear because of process of freeing 14 nations can't be something bad. The situation is clear here when Russia will clearly declare that occupation of the Baltics was mistake and that will not repeated (by Signing border treaty for example) there cant be no other way to threat those soliders as occupants of criminal communist regime who was much worse for Estonia than Nazi occupation. Estonian law will threat communist and fascist equaly as they really are in nature.

One thing, as we have been selling Estonia in the West all these years, is that Estonia has weathered all this ethnic storm without any chaos and race wars. I don't like these youth groups running around fighting skinheads and more. The Tartu incident worries me. I hate for Putin and friends to call it "provokatsiya" as they love that word. Then what will the Fascist "Nashi" do to retaliate? They are completely out of control and I hate to see this escalate to the point of us being on every headline around the world...undoing all the work we've been doing for the last 16+ years...

Why are they doing it? Why is the younger generation, that has benefited most from the reforms in Estonia, hell, from Estonian independence, finding time to play little games on behalf of Uncle Vladimir or, in Estonia, Onu Tiit (Madisson)?

and suddenly, little cozy wooden Tartu seemed kind of different

but never forget, they are a minorities, they might be in the headlines, they might be in the news but they are not representative for all russian or estonian citizens...

It just annoys me that they are young. And, for the attention of our skinheaded friends, I'd like to remind you all that Estonians are prone to having high-cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, ie. you've got some asiatic roots, homeboys.

For our Russian friends, seriously, get a life. God, I miss the days of Yeltsin when it was all about the TECHNO, and the DESIGNER JEANS, and the TECHNO. F*ing Putin and his napoleonic complex.

Word to the wise, never choose a little man to be president of a big country.

What worries me is all it takes is a handful of stupid young people and everything can go down the drain very quickly. If the VEE people retaliate, or we get -- as you say -- Lihula on steroids -- when they do the Tõnismäe shuffle, I hate to see escalation or retaliation or just tit-for-tat stuff.

This is the kind of stuff that Putin and the Nashi thugs would call "provokatsiya" and it'll be a whole lot worse than any trade embargo (which they won't do because that would block their WTO bid).

And I really worry about the lack of leadership from ALL sides in Estonia, especially with political parties. What we don't need is a flashback and have these 'youth branches' of parties turn into de facto paramilitary units...

Well, nobody condemns it, at least in the international press. The most thoughtful words I have read so far (in English) have been from, of all people, Edgar Savisaar.

Anonüümne ütles ...

Savisaar is afraid because he knows he loses out the more nationalistic the mood of the electorate is. If anything, Rahvaliit may get some extra votes since they are more "nationalistic" than many parties. If things are good and calm, people feel they can risk voting for him out of some sense of guilt over the "left out" folks...

BTW remember the whole "Houston" thing? Here's something from the Beeb that talks about the Deutsche version of it...
