no memory

"And did you see, he was born in 1988?" "So what." "I don't know, it's just weird for me still." "What, that they've grown up and become young adults?" "And not even, ____'s daughter was born in '92! Now, she's a young lawyer in Tallinn." "A lawyer?" "Yes." "I wanted to write a column about them once, but I never got around to it. There is this quote in The Shawshank Redemption. He's talking about how he wants to forget about prison and go to Mexico, to the Pacific, because they say the Pacific has no memory. And that's how I feel about them. They have no memory. No Cold War, no Persian Gulf War. On one hand, it's kind of sad, but on the other, it's liberating and fresh. No memory. It's like starting all over." "It's a good movie, especially the last scene." "I know. But think about it. To us, Gorbachev is like an old uncle. He's a huge, I don't know how to say it, kuju, you know." "Uh huh." "But to them, he's just someone in a textbook, some guy who led the Soviet Union for a few years before it fell apart ... Oh, Uncle Gorby, we've missed you, it's been too long" ...

Whats up with the new graphics? Hunt kriimsilma mitu ametit? :)

Nice, though I would have gone for something more upbeat. Did you know that we can browse your blog through rss in Google Currents and Flipboard, would be nice if you could transfer the look and comments in to these too.

I realized the old template looked like something from '05, and so picked something new that seemed remotely "Estonian." Honestly, not so talented at these tech things. For example, I don't know what Flipboard is, and rss and Google Currents only sound vaguely familiar.

Flipboard is a news reader for tablets and smartphones. You can have all your main news sites, blogs and social media in one app. People nowadays use web browsers less and less, so being present on those big content sharing apps is rather important to independent bloggers.

What you could do, just do a google search for lets say top 10 newsreaders, install them and search your own blog in those. And when it comes up you can then evaluate if it looks the way you intended and if not you can just look in to it, e-mail to the guys who run the app etc.

Despite still being in school when the Eastern Bloc fell, I actually remember deploring the generations coming after me who would not have the memory of this historical event.

And sometimes when I think that it makes no difference, I'm actually reminded by it when people only five or ten years younger than me talk about 9/11 as their personal life-changing event.

When this happens I can't help feeling a secret satisfaction that my outlook was not determined by 9/11 but by 11/9 (the Wall), and that somehow my long-term world view has an undertone of optimism rather than fear.

I feel the same satisfaction, though I do worry sometimes that if I don't think about it often enough, I'll forget pieces of it.
