puhastus

Yesterday, the Estonian Green party expelled some of its top members, including former leader Peeter Jalakas, who briefly replaced party leader Marek Strandberg after the party bombed in last year's municipal elections before Strandberg muscled his way back to the top. In total, 20 members of the party were given the boot, officially on an ideological basis, though I suspect there were personal reasons too.

In carrying out this purge, the party leadership has removed internal opposition. That might help them iron out a platform for next year's parliamentary elections. But the question remains, how will a party that is on life support already benefit by eliminating some of its better known members? Can the Estonian Greens really afford to get rid of its members when it polls abysmally, and wasn't able to get any seats in the municipal elections or last year's European parliamentary elections?

I have always felt that Estonia needs a postmodern Green party to shake up the dull back and forth between the Reform Party-led right and the Centre Party-led left. But is the current Green party the Green party that Estonia needs? Or will it mosey off into political oblivion after it (likely) goes down in the next parliamentary elections?

If I recall correctly, political parties in Estonia get subsidized by the taxpayers? Right? So if you are a well-greased party-apparachik, questions like does Estonia this kind of party or that kind of party are all nicely answered. And can you blame them? How many other industries are there in Estonia where one can earn a normal living?

Every party within Estonia has an internal opposition. It's odd that this small party would expel its own members.

Nothing odd about it if we look at this as an example of the new austerity measures. Every herd is getting culled so that big honchos can keep riding their taxpayer subsidized benzes. Estonia's little pie is shrinking fast. In these crowded beds of Maarjamaa the collective blanket yanking will get more vigorous as the MASU wears on. You'll see. :-)

I don't know anything about Estonian Green Party, but I sincerely hope they take their lead from someplace else than Finland. Here the Greens are infested with whom one could call neo-marxists.

That damned bastard just took away the only party that I would have voted for in March. Wouldn't be an overstatement if I said that I passionately hate this greedy, lying scumbag of an egomaniac right now.

Giustino ütles ...

Something like a third of Estonian voters don't support any party. That leaves a big gaping hole for new parties/candidates to walk through.

LPR ütles ...

There is no hole. Almost half the people simply say F it all! There is no hole left in that for anyone.

Sane people are trying to live outside the matrix.

There are no oppositions inside parties. There may be competing cliques, but that's another story. You will never see it from the outside, but I was inside there. Are they red or green, or.. whatever, they are all the same. Their aim is not a better policy, or a better country, their aim is simply power. To establish own egoistic will. In that they are assisted by party members, "the simple people", who are so "simple" indeed that they are happy enough if a "big one" goes by and pats their head.

So, to change the parties or what happens in them and in Estonia, one needs to change not the upper layers but the lower ones, "the simple people" inside the parties who approve it by their votes.

Now who can do that??

I agree with Horse Who Rides a Duck, though I disagree that a change in color to a "redder green" and executing Nordic walkers is the answer.

@Markku

Its not only in Finland. Most Green parties in Europe are nothing more than communists in disguise.
For example GreenLeft in the Netherlands used to be Communist Party of the Netherlands who changed her name after the fall of soviet union.
