TNR Goes to Estonia and Finds it Stimulating

In the latest issue of The New Republic, Tom Bissell goes to Estonia to find out what all of the 'e-Stonia' buzz is about, and oh, how he finds it.

The best parts of his piece are definitely his first hand experiences in Tallinn, but my personal favorites are his glowing reaction to Estonian womanhood. "Tallinn boasted what I can say were--without fear of hyperbole--the most jaw-droppingly beautiful women I have ever seen in my life," he writes. When he loses his bank card and has to go to Hansapank to pick it up, "a six-foot-two-inch Estonian Amazon so glowingly blonde she appeared to be irradiated" retrieves his new card for him.

Bissell also reacts warmly to the wife of Scott Diel, who is editor of The City Paper. "Diel's biggest impetus for staying in Estonia, he told me, other than his predictably lovely Estonian wife, was 'lifestyle'," Bissell notes.

There's a lot more meat to the story than Bissell's admiration for the exotic Estonian female. But I like it the best. It reminds me of when I was younger and single and sitting in a cafe in Oslo going, "Oh my God." And yes, there are some beauties in Estonia and I do recall at least one time going to the desk at Hansapank and completely forgetting what I was doing there or perhaps, what my name was. So here's a big "terviseks" to Bissell for so honestly portraying his experience. It is of benefit to us all. So read the piece. He is equally smitten with Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

A positive and realistic article.

Yeah, hell, Estonian men are also cool enough to attract local girls, so, ye dirty foreigners don't stand a chance anyway. Shoo!
All foreign girls are still welcome, of course. Reminds me that really-really nice girl from Seattle I met in Tallinn week ago...

Anon. (intoxicated, but sincere)

There's something about those girls from the green belt ...

I guess green belt girls would be out of reach of the average American. Estonia is now an alternative source for world class trophy wives.

It's very sick. When I was in Tallinn I heard a few jokes about that. Are Estonian women attractive? Some of them are. But I remember being in Mexico and thinking that the Mexican women - part Spanish, part Maya - were gorgeous.

I don't like the way Estonian women are, for lack of better words, objectified. I wish I could do something about it.

I am posting this as anonymous. It is old Russian saying "there's no such thing as ugly woman, just not enough vodka".

Thank you for this overview.

Green belt girls are ladies from Washington State in the US (and the pacific Northwest as a whole) that have grown up hiking in forests and taking saunas and wearing flannel. They can identify plant species in the forest and things of this nature, and know what is poisonous and what is not in my ideal world.

It's because they still exude a certain rural fecundity absent in a Western European capital like London.

Don't you want to reproduce with a lady who knows which mushrooms are poisonous and which ones are safe to eat?

I went to Zaire the other day and checked out the butts of the local women. Then I went to Thailand and paid two dollars for a local hooker hooked up to electrical wires held in the hand of her pimp who gave her shocks when she stopped smiling. In Poland the women were poor but materialistic and we Westerners just had a great time with those subhumans. The Eskimo women smelled too much of rancid blubber. I dig a French bikini on a colonized and conquered Hawaiian island, Barbie dolls by a palm tree in the sand. My China doll in old Hong Kong waits for my return, working for the Yankee dolla. Suckee-f#&kee two dolla.

Estonian slabs of meat hanging on a blog meathook, this sure is a nice world we live in. Me, I like real human beings. The Estonian women in my life have talked to me and we had real human relations in addition to the trysts we enjoyed. They are living breathing human beings, with mothers and fathers and families. Many of them now have children of their own. They are human beings with feelings.

What kind of a discussion is this? "Trophy wives"? What sort of a world have so many of you in the West created? If you want someone to wash your socks, go to the laundry, if you want sex, do it by hand yourself instad of using human receptacles. Show some respect for other cultures, live by the Golden Rule. Or perhaps swarms of horny locusts with lots of spending cash should descend upon the homelands of the sex tourists and the trophy hunters to bone your sisters and mothers?

Here a few lines from the Beatles dedicated to the proud and tender Estonian women I love and honor. They are my sisters, not the playthings of hubris-filled drunk louts.

All these places have their moments
Of lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I loved them all.

And with all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these mem'ries lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I loved you more.

And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
